The Jazzman of Rosenthaler Platz

The Jazzman of Rosenthaler Platz is a documentary about recognition, dignity, and the people we rarely stop to notice. It follows Malachi “Mike” Basden, a jazz musician and artist who has made Rosenthaler Platz both his stage and his home, using music and art to connect to the people around him.

More than just the story of a street performer, this film asks how we see those on the edge of society. It asks what it truly means to be seen. What happens when we stop, listen, and see the humanity in the people we pass by every day?

Storyline

The Jazzman of Rosenthaler Platz follows Malachi “Mike” Basden, a New York-born jazz musician and street artist who has transformed Berlin’s Rosenthaler Platz into both his home and his stage. With a saxophone in hand and sketchbook in his bag, Mike asks people to pause, listen, and truly see the people we often overlook.

Once a rising talent, Mike’s path to Berlin wasn’t linear. It was shaped by personal pain, broken trust, and a constant search for artistic freedom. Now living on the margins, his music and drawings offer moments of connection.

The Jazzman of Rosenthaler Platz is not a story of redemption or rescue. It’s a portrait of survival through art, of second chances, and the dignity that comes from being recognized. Even just for a moment. Through Mike’s story, the film asks a simple but powerful question: What happens when we finally stop and see the people we pass every day?
